SIRC organising national conference on ‘Direct Taxes and Allied Laws’

The Mangalore branch of the Southern India Regional Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) is organising ‘Anveshana’, a national conference on ‘Direct Taxes and Allied Laws’ on August 20 and 21.

Organised by the Direct Taxes Committee of ICAI, the conference will be held at Loyola Hall, St. Aloysius PU College, Mangalore. ‘Anveshana’ will draw speakers from across the country, including the Vice-President of ICAI, Mr G. Ramaswamy, and two past-Presidents, including Mr T.N. Manoharan. Dr V.S. Acharya, the Karnataka Home Minister, will be the chief guest at the inaugural function.

Mr U.K. Basu, Managing Director, MRPL, will be one of the guests of honour. Mr G. Ramaswamy, Vice-President of ICAI, will preside over the function. The first session will be addressed by Mr Manoharan, who is a director nominated by the Government and Chairman of the Audit Committee of Satyam Computer Services Ltd (NYSE:SAY) (now Mahindra Satyam). He will discuss the important proposals of the Direct Tax Code.

Mr Jayant Gokhale, a Chartered Accountant specializing in Income-Tax Law, will discuss practical issues relating to the Appellate Proceeding. The fourth session will be conducted by Mr S. Venkatrami, a Chartered Accountant and an expert in Indirect Taxes on recent issues in Works Contact under the Karnataka VAT law. On the second day, there will be a special session by Swami Purnakamanadaji Maharaj of Sri Ramakrishna Mission, Mangalore. Past President of ICAI, Mr R. Bhupathy, will then enumerate various issues on deductions under the ‘Head Business and Profession under Income Tax Law.’ Mr K Vaitheeswaran, an advocate specialising in Indirect Taxes, will discuss Service Tax.

Mr Chinnsamy Ganesan, a Chartered Accountant will then discuss the applicability of various accounting standards in relation to Tax Audit. Mr K. Raghu, a Central Council Member of ICAI, will conduct the final session on various case studies in the Code of Ethics under the CA Act.
